Tidal Cruising

I’ve been on the Avon, the Severn, and the Thames, but all are inland where the main danger is to try and not go after heavy rain when the current gets strong. Unlike the crew of Indigo Dream, who went out into the Severn Estuary, with a pilot of course, but in heavy fog.

Part of me thinks it would be nice to do at some point, but the part of me that’s scared witless at the thought wins out so far – seeing how your boat reacts on a choppy river, probably means it could be a big adrenaline rush. Hmm, maybe.

I am not sure if you know about the St Pancras Cruising Club? They organise a great tidal trip to the Royal Docks every year for the January boat show (well I think it is every year). You go down Bow Creek, past the Millennium Dome, dodge the Woolwich Ferry and then go through this truly massive lock either with a bunch of huge gin palaces or a Navy warship. The gin palaces put out fenders, the warship puts boys on deck with big guns to protect their paintwork.

Their web site is here: http://www.stpancrascc.co.uk/ Nothing on forthcoming events but hopefully something will appear.
